National Car Parks (NCP)

Location: Various UK locations
Description: Car Parking Business
Size: Owned and/or operated over 850 car parks
Strategy: Corporate Situation / Platform Business

NCP is a leading car park operator and on-street parking services provider in the UK. In 2002, the NCP business was acquired by Cinven, one of the UK’s premier private equity firms. Cinven approached Mountgrange and brought the team in as a co-investor, with Manish Chande as Chairman to improve financial performance and develop the business.

During the period of co-ownership, 850 car parks were owned and/or managed including 29 airport car parks at ten of the busiest UK airports with more than 60 million customer visits per annum. With similarities to the Trillium business model, Mountgrange managed the sale and leaseback of the company’s freehold property portfolio and strategically repositioned NCP to create a high-growth, integrated parking and traffic management services business.

On the strength of improving operating performance, a £99 million recapitalisation was completed in 2003. The business was sold in 2005 to 3i, a UK-based private equity firm.
